Sometimes people are unable to distinguish what is Sushi and what is Sashimi. The confusion between the two plates ensues because of the unfamiliarity with the ancient Japanese eating habits.
In this article, we will be pointing out a few differences between the two dishes.
According to a Japanese connoisseur, Sushi literally means sour-tasting whereas Sashimi means sliced raw protein. In fact, at a certain point of history, Sashimi was only eaten by Samurais before getting popularized, while Sushi has always been a dish that you can find on every Japanese table.
Unlike most people think, Sushi’s main ingredient is vinegared rice and not raw fish or meat. Of course, there are many varieties of this plate where it is served with raw seafood, however, it is also often paired with vegetables and/or eggs.
On the other hand, Sashimi can’t be served without raw meat because it is practically the only ingredient of the dish. In most of the cases, it is served with soy sauce or wasabi paste or a mixture of both.
Both Sushi and Sashimi have many varieties, traditional as well as modern. For instance, Sashimi can consist of a slice of Salmon, Tuna, Shrimp, Squid, Octopus, Mackerel, Horse Mackerel, and less commonly beef or chicken.
Likewise, Sushi has its wide range of variations amongst which the most known in Japan are Chirashizushi that consists of a rice ball topped with raw fish and some veggies, Inarizushi which is basically fried tofu filled with rice and Makizushi that incorporates Nori and rice rolled together with a piece of fresh fish.
We can also name Narezushi which is Sushi made with matured or dried fish and Nigirizushi that is rice pressed into an oval shape with some raw fish on top of it.
Finally, we could mention Oshizushi, which has nearly the same ingredients as the Chirashizushi but it stands out from it by its block shape.
Anyhow, the western world gave birth to different types of Sushi, which are not less sumptuous, like Uramaki which is a sort of inverted sushi where the rice roll is outside and the seaweed in the middle, rolling up the insider filling.
We can also name the American-style Makizushi which consists of the conventional Sushi roll, but with some modifications on the inside. On the very outside, you’ll find Nori followed up by layered, vinegared and/or sweetened rice. However, the heart of the roll varies widely in ingredients as well as in the way of preparation. It all depends on the Chef’s specialties.
It should be noted that the mentioned Sushi variations have many modern derivatives themselves. Particularly in the United States, you can find a different derivative of Sushi almost in every State. We can point out to the Alaskan roll, the Boston roll, the Michigan roll, the Hawaiian roll, the California roll, the Philadelphia roll, and the list goes on.
Obviously, Sushi is a rather elaborate dish compared to Sashimi as it takes a lot of expertise from the chef to successfully prepare this dish. Furthermore, Sushi can include Sashimi among its ingredients while the contrary is not possible. But nonetheless, both Sushi and Sashimi are considered to be culinary delicacies that you can enjoy with your loved ones.
