How to Blanch Almonds

Many people prefer blanched almonds over brown ones because the latters tend to be mildly bitter. The bitterness goes away when the almonds are peeled off of their skin.

In the present guide, we will be showing 4 easy ways to blanch almonds so you can enjoy it as it is or use it in a recipe.

1. Soak them overnight

This method is old but gold. All you need to do is to pour your almonds into a bowl, then add some regular tap water until the almonds are completely submerged. Cover your recipient and let it rest for one night. In the following morning, filter your almonds in a strainer. At this point, the skin of the almonds should be soft enough, and you can easily peel them off.

You should note that if you intend to roast them in the oven, spread them on a kitchen towel and let them sit for a few days in a dry place to allow them to drain out the water they absorbed.

However, if you want them soft and fresh, then that’s even better because soaked almonds are healthier and much easier to digest compared to hard almonds, whether the latter are raw or roasted.

2. Steam them

Steaming your almonds will make their skin loose and peelable. Actually, because of the steam, the almonds will soften too.  If that’s how you want your almonds to be, you should leave them in the steamer for a while.  If it’s not the case and if you prefer your almonds to be rather hard, then you only need to leave them for 10 minutes in the steamer. That time should be sufficient to loosen their skin. Remember to run them under cold water to prevent them from further softening, and to prevent you from getting your fingers burned.

3. Microwave them

Put all your nuts in a container. Pour some water over them, then heat them in the microwave for about 5 minutes at a high temperature. Afterward, drain the almonds in a strainer, and you can cool them down with some cold water to make it easier for you to peel them off.

4. Boil them

For this, you’re going to need a saucepan filled with water. Put it on the stove until the water starts to boil. Add your almonds to the boiling water and leave them for no longer than 1 minute so they wouldn’t get softened.

Immediately after, put your almonds in a strainer and run them under cold water. Peel off and enjoy.

Alternatively, instead of boiling the almonds for 1 minute you could pour boiling water over it and let it sit for 2 minutes, then proceed the same way with draining and peeling.

Blanched almonds can be left as is to be consumed and stored or you can use them to make almond flour, almond milk, and almond paste. These ingredients can be used to make delicious recipes. Give it a go.
