10 ways to soften the leather

Leathers are made out of animal skin, such as cow skin, buffalo skin, goat skin, sheep skin, deer skin, crocodile skin, etc. Manufacturers and craftsmen often use cowhide leather to make up their final product.

Since leather is an actual skin, it can dry out and harden just like ours. In order to prevent your leather item from getting damaged, here’s the list of the top 10 tricks to apply that can save your precious leather piece, whether it’s a shoe, a jacket or a purse.

1. Olive oil

Pour a generous amount of olive oil on your leather item. Start massaging it just like you would massage your hand or face. While you’re rubbing your item, try to dilate it gently to allow the oil to penetrate the pores. Keep this process going for about an hour then wipe off the excess oils. Your item should look not only softer but also cleaner and fresher.

2. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is as good for your skin as it is for your leather clothes and furniture! In order to get started with the softening, put a layer of coconut oil on your item and start rubbing it until it completely absorbs most of the applied oil. Afterward, clean off the excess and enjoy your renewed and softened leather item.

3. Vaseline

Start by cleaning your leather item with some rubbing alcohol or some oxygenated water and let it dry completely. Afterward, take a soft brush and start applying Vaseline on the leather. Keep layering the Vaseline until you notice that your item is becoming noticeably softer. In that case, all is left to do is to polish it with a clean sponge or cloth.

4. Leather conditioner

This product is exclusively dedicated to preventing your leather from getting ruined. And even though leather conditioners may be expensive, they are in fact one of the most effective solutions to softening your leather. All you have to do is to apply and let dry.

In case this product is out of your reach, replace it with regular hair conditioner. It would work just as fine only it needs a longer time to get dry.

5. Shaving cream

First, you have to spray a small amount of shaving cream on a moist rag. Second, use this rag to gently scrub your item and finally, repeat as often as necessary.

Although, we strongly advise against directly spraying the shaving cream directly on your leather item, because it may damage it.

6. Saddle soap

Saddle soap will help you protect and recondition your leather because it contains softening materials such as lanolin that is very effective in making leather smooth and loose.

Put a small amount on a clean cloth with which you need to start rubbing your item horizontally. Afterward, take another cloth to clear the excess.

7. Hot steam

Hot moisture can help you soften and stretch out any leather garment you own. All you have to do is to put your item near a steamer machine. If you don’t have one, put it in the bathroom while you’re taking a hot bath. Leave it there for a while until it expands and softens. Finally, wipe the moisture with a towel.

8. Sunlight

Exposures to sunlight make leather more tender. You can give it a try but make sure not to leave your item sunbathing for too long because it may get damaged especially if the weather is too hot.

9. Drying machine

If you are in a hurry, you can put your leather piece in the drying machine at a medium temperature. However, you need to remember not to put the machine on for more than 10 to 15 minutes at once. Otherwise, your leather may shrink or get burned out. This method works best with new items because the drying machine simulates natural wear which usually gives the leather a soft aspect.

10. Hairdryer

If you don’t have a drying machine, you can use your blow-dryer instead. In fact, it will be as effective, and you’ll restore the tenderness of your leather element in no time.

As a matter of fact, leather products are distinctive and luxurious. They have been made with great care and shall be used in the same way to last as long as possible.
